Farther Along

So here’s what God has been so graciously bombarding me with this week – hindsight is 20/20.  There will be a day when I’ll glance back and know why we didn’t get that house or why I had to miss that trip or why I felt so compelled to call that lady, etc.  There will.  It's so impossibly difficult to believe in the middle of "it", but if you had any history at all with God, you know it's true.
To order a copy email the auther at: aurasjourney@sbcglobal.net

I’ve been reading “Aura's Journey”, a book about a Honduran girl born into the triple whammy of dire poverty, deafness, and eventual blindness.  It’s an incredible look into Aura’s path from poverty and no language to the Arkansas School for the Deaf where she graduated with honors, back to Honduras where she (along with others) have literally “changed the course of history for Deaf Hondurans."

We had the honor of hosting the author at church last week.  She and her family were the ones who welcomed Aura into their home as a daughter, and fought for her at every step.  Here are some quotes from the book:

Aura’s Journey shows how God can take all of our weaknesses, doubts, fears, and even disabilities and turn the ordinary water of our lives into wine for His glory. (From book forward by Christy Owen)

You may have heard the phrase, “God doesn’t call the equipped; He equips the called.”  I suppose that holds true whether you are a poor fisherman, a tax collector or just two middle-class Americans wondering what the next step is to be… What I am trying to say is that we did not start out prepared for what was about to happen.

As I write these words, I am awed at the sovereignty and personal involvement of God as He moves people into His purposes.  Yet, we must all remember that we don’t really have to move toward God’s purpose.  When we actually follow what is unmistakably the Spirit’s call, amazing adventure and blessings come our way.  Everyone in this story, thus far, just trusted and obeyed, letting God do the leading.

Sometimes we want to jump in with all fours and rush God’s plan.  Yet God is not limited by chance.  Albert Einstein once said “God doesn’t play dice.”  He knows exactly what he is doing, even if we don’t.  His timing is perfect in every aspect of our lives.  Sometimes we don’t realize this until we look back and say, “I am so glad God did not answer that prayer.  Or, than happened exactly when I needed for it to happen.”  God does indeed equip the called, and sometimes it takes time.

Plans.  God’s plans.  What a difficult concept that is for some of us to grasp.  Yes, I have to include myself in the “some of us.”  I am a planner, an obsessive list maker and a goal setter.  After all, my career as a teacher and mother lent itself to planning my agenda, along with everyone else’s, including Aura’s.  However, I realized that God’s plans to prosper Aura, giving her a future and a hope did not quite mesh with mine.

He is indeed a Sovereign and personal God who loves us unconditionally.  He gently guides us and, if we are willing, places us in just the right place at the right time to live out His purposes.  We may end up being on a mission field in another country or in our community where we do life together with other people.

My prayer for Aura, her family and friends, for you, dear reader and for all of us is that God continue to guide our every step and that we may know how great is His faithfulness.

Great book, get a copy.

Love this song from Josh Garrels, our current obsession.  Same song, different tune.  I told you He was bombarding me.

"So much more to life than we've been told
It’s full of beauty that will unfold
And shine like you struck gold"
