What I read in Proverbs
today:
My son, hear the
instruction of your father,
And do not forsake the law
of your mother;
For they will be a
graceful ornament on your head,
And chains about your
neck.
1:8-9
[So thankful for my Godly
parents and their example to me.]
But they lie in wait for
their own blood,
They lurk secretly for their own lives.
So are the ways of
everyone who is greedy for gain;
It takes away the life of
its owners.
1:18-19
[Keep me from this God.
Alert me when I'm destroying my own life going after thangs.]
Turn at my rebuke;
Surely I will pour out my
spirit on you;
I will make my words known
to you.
1:23
[I am sooo bad at liking
of even listening to a rebuke. From anyone. Change me God.
Because I want your Spirit poured out on me.]
My son, if you receive my
words,
And treasure my commands
within you,
So that you incline your
ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding;
Then you will understand
the fear of the Lord,
And find the knowledge of
God.
2:1-5
[Got to love if/then's.
IF I value the word of God enough to actually read it, THEN I will find
the knowledge of the creator of the universe.]
For the Lord gives wisdom;
From His mouth come
knowledge and understanding;
He stores up sound wisdom
for the upright;
He is a shield
to those who walk uprightly;
He guards the paths of
justice,
And preserves the way of
His saints.
2:6-8
[There is a storehouse of
wisdom about my money, my marriage, my job, my friendships, my character, my
children, my schedule, my everything! Piled up, just waiting for me to
find it. Or to look for it.]
Then you will understand
righteousness and justice,
Equity and every
good path.
When wisdom enters your
heart,
And knowledge is pleasant
to your soul,
Discretion will preserve
you;
Understanding will keep you,
2:1-11
[I don't have to figure out
how to keep our church drama group running or the next year in school for the
kids or how we'll celebrate Easter. God's word and Spirit will keep me
running.]
Trust in the Lord with all
your heart,
And lean not on your own
understanding;
In all your ways
acknowledge Him,
And He shall
direct your paths.
3:5 – 6
[Shall is a pretty strong
word. If I will JUST ask God about every area of my life, He will tell me
what to do, where to go, what to say. Why do I persist in asking not and
therefore having not? James 4:2]
My son, do not despise the
chastening of the Lord,
Nor detest His correction;
For whom the Lord loves He
corrects,
Just as a father the son in
whom he delights.
2:11 – 12
[Another reminder to NOT
be bad at being rebuked. God change me, bend my will. Remind me
that it's out of love for me that you send rebuke.]
The Lord by wisdom founded
the earth;
By understanding He
established the heavens;
By His knowledge the
depths were broken up,
And clouds drop down the dew.
2:19 – 29
[Can't even begin to
understand this but it's beyond cool.]
Do not withhold good from
those to whom it is due,
When it is in the power of
your hand to do so.
Do not say to your
neighbor,
“Go, and come back,
And tomorrow I will give it,”
When
you have it with you.
Do not devise evil against
your neighbor,
For he dwells by you for safety’s sake.
2:27 – 29
[More about my neighbor
later.]
Surely He scorns the
scornful,
But gives grace to the humble.
2:34
[God remind me when I'm not humble that I need your grace more than
anyone.]
